Version 1.124 of the PB Server for ET has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page. This version converts some prior PB Violation kicks into Restriction kicks. We have confirmed that several gamehack violations (#81048-81054) triggered since the prior PB Server update on 01.07.2004 in ET could have been caused by files or memory that were corrupted by non-cheat programs such as virii, adware, no-cd programs, etc. We encourage PB Admins to give players the benefit of the doubt for these violations.

Thursday 01.13.2005 [4:45PM]

We have confirmed that the recently released update for the Xfire (www.xfire.com) instant messaging program has triggered PB Violations #90003 and #90011 when the chat overlay system is used while playing on a PunkBuster enabled server in OpenGL mode. Today, Xfire released a v1.31 update to correct the problem on their end. We encourage PB admins to give the benefit of the doubt to players who received either of these violations since Dec. 30th. As these are generic cheat hook detection algorithms, we will not be removing them from our system. Players who use Xfire while playing on PB Servers should update to the new version immediately.

  • new setting "pb_sv_filewhitelist [game_subfolder] [file1] [file2] ... [fileN]" can be used by PB admins to limit the filenames allowed in a specific game subfolder; this can be used in conjunction with PB's MD5Tool to check filesizes and file signatures of the allowable files

Thursday 12.4.2003 [5:00PM]

Version 1.061 of the PB Server for ET has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page. This version includes a new PunkBuster facility called PB Restrictions. By default, PB Restrictions are Enabled; the pb_sv_restrictions setting may be set to 0 by server admins who do not wish for PB to kick for PB Restrictions. Kicking for PB Restrictions will be announced to players that join PB servers in the "WARNING: PB Kicks for ... All PB Restrictions on this server" message shortly after joining a server where PB Restrictions are Enabled. Initially, this facility will only work properly on Internet based PB Servers but will be extended to LAN servers in a future update. We expect to activate PB Restriction logging/kicking after the next PB Client update. Players who are kicked for a PB Restriction will be notified of the reason they were kicked. Additionally, PB Restrictions will be logged on all PB Servers even when kicking is disabled.

In general, the PB Restriction facility represents a tighter set of parameters for playing on PB Servers. A player who fails a PB Restriction check should not necessarily be considered a cheater, so we advise PB Admins to consider initial PB kicks for restrictions to be warnings to the players who are kicked so that they may either honor the restriction by correcting their setup or play on other servers. However, we also encourage PB admins to deal with repeat offenders of PB Restrictions as they see fit. The initial group of restrictions will deal with unusual opengl32.dll access or hooking. Players whose systems do not return proper information about the game using a single opengl32.dll system file will be considered restricted by this new facility (Note: Anyone still trying to play PB games running under Windows NT v4 is going to be considered restricted by default). Future updates may require the most current version of DirectX/display drivers to be installed, etc. We will gladly accept and consider suggestions for future restriction possibilities from the community via email to research@evenbalance.com.

Release Notes for PB Server v1.061:

  • new pb_sv_restrictions setting defaults to 1 (which means kicking for PB Restrictions is Enabled)
  • addressed bug in Linux PB Server that caused PB to not be able to restart itself (such as after an update) on some Linux servers

The ET GUID Auth Server has just been updated to correct a bug that sometimes caused the "Cdkey in use at different IP Address" message to appear for some players on some servers when it should not have appeared. Please let us know via email to support@evenbalance.com if you receive this message going forward when playing on Internet based ET Servers.

Friday 7.11.2003 [10:00AM]

Version 1.040 of the PB Client for ET has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page. We have confirmed that the latest ET Server update patch released on June 26th by Activision may cause #90002 violations in PB Clients version 1.039 and prior for players who are using the server patch as their playing executable. Version 1.040 released today corrects this problem. We advise all PB Server Admins to give the benefit of the doubt to players and ignore #90002 violations raised between June 26th and today, July 11th.

Wednesday 6.25.2003 [8:15AM]

Version 1.038 of the PB Server for ET has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page.

Release Notes for PB Server v1.038:

  • displays #20005 violations but (temporarily) will not kick for them

Friday 6.20.2003 [2:30PM]

Version 1.039 of the PB Client for ET has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page. Version 1.038 released yesterday contained new built-in checks for some cheat protected cvars which triggered several #20005 violations. It has been discovered that some of these players had trailing spaces in the cheat protected cvars for some reason thus setting off violation #20005. We encourage PB Admins to give players the benefit of the doubt and ignore any #20005 violations that occurred while running with PB Client v1.038.

Release Notes for PB Client v1.039:

  • added code to remove trailing spaces from cheat protected cvars before comparing with acceptable (default) values

Thursday 6.19.2003 [5:15PM]

Version 1.038 of the PB Client for ET has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page.

Release Notes for PB Client v1.038:

  • new command "/pb_alist [slot#]" that shows the list of aliases used by a specific player on the connected PB server; use the /pb_plist console command to get a list of players and use the PB slot # shown in the pb_plist output for the pb_alist command; for example, issuing "/pb_alist 3" (without the quotes) into the console will pull a list of Aliases used by the player in PB Slot #3 and show how many times each alias has been used on the server plus the date of first and last use; the maximum number of aliases tracked per player by the PB server is also shown; if the PB Server does not have the Alias Tracking Facility enabled, then a message to that effect will be displayed when this command is issued; NOTE: this command only works when connected to PB Servers v1.037 and higher

Thursday 6.19.2003 [3:15PM]

Version 1.037 of the PB Server for ET has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page.

Release Notes for PB Server v1.037:

  • new Alias-related feature for servers with Alias Tracking Facility enabled: players who are currently playing with an alias that is not their most commonly used alias on the server will be denoted with an "~ALIAS~" prefix in the player issued /pb_plist command; now players can use /pb_plist to easily see if another player is using a name that is not his/her 'usual' name on that PB server

Thursday 6.19.2003 [1:15PM]

New detection code was released today that appears to be causing 'Video Hack' violations for players who are not running hacks. We have temporarily disabled these detections until this issue can be resolved. We suggest that PB Admins ignore #9xxxx violations that were raised today. 'Video Hack' violations that were raised prior to today are still valid.

Wednesday 6.18.2003 [6:45PM]

Version 1.036 of the PB Server for ET has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page.

Release Notes for PB Server v1.036:

  • new (optional) Alias Tracking Facility that allows admins to set up PB for tracking different names used by the same player (GUID)
  • pb_sv_aliasmax setting defaults to 0 which means alias tracking is disabled; set to some value above 0 to enable and to specify how many aliases will be stored for each GUID; if the player uses more aliases than the max, the later ones will be ignored
  • the below commands/settings apply when pb_sv_aliasmax is set above 0 (enabled as described above)
  • pb_sv_alist command lists all aliases used by each GUID; the PB slot# must be specified after the command (the slot# is shown by the pb_sv_plist command); the first column in the output states how many times a player (GUID) has used that alias; the 2nd and 3rd columns state when the name was used the first and last time (year-month-day format); the 4th column displays the actual alias used
  • NOTE: to search for a specific GUID even if the player is not currently connected, use pb_sv_alist (same as above, just specify full 32 character GUID instead of slot#)
  • every time a player joins or changes player name, the PB server will check to see if the name being used is already logged in the Alias database; if so, the count is incremented and the Date last used field is updated; if it is the first time for a given alias/GUID combination, then a record is appended to the pbalias.dat file in the 'pb' folder
  • the new pb_sv_aliasfn can optionally be set to any file on the file-system to direct PB to use instead of the default pbalias.dat file (must specify full path or else the file will be stored in fs_basepath location)
  • new command pb_sv_aliaswrite is used to write all the aliases in memory to disk; if desired, an alternate filename (other than pbalias.dat) may be specified after the pb_sv_aliaswrite command to have PB write the Alias database to the alternate filename
  • NOTE: using pb_sv_aliaswrite is optional as PB updates the database at every map change automatically; however, the map change updates only append new information to the file and thus cause it to grow greatly in size on busy servers; conversely, the pb_sv_aliaswrite command writes a fresh copy of the entire Alias database to disk, this may take a number of seconds on very busy servers - for best results, we recommend starting up a 'dummy' game server just to issue this command and then exit so as not to adversely affect gameplay on populated game servers
  • new command pb_sv_aliasload loads the Alias database from the pb_sv_aliasfn file (or default pbalias.dat file accordingly); PB will load the database automatically on startup if pb_sv_aliasmax is set to non-zero in the pbsvuser.cfg file; this command is provided only as manual method to load an Alias database for a running server
  • new setting pb_sv_aliasautoload defaults to 0; if set to 1, PB will reload from the Alias database file after each map change; this is useful for cases where multiple servers share an alias database file so that each instance of PB gets updates from other servers sharing the same file; NOTE: on busy servers, using this function will increase map load times and should be used only after careful experimentation on your server(s)
  • new setting pb_sv_aliasmaxenforce defaults to 0; if set to 1, PB will kick players who try to use more than pb_sv_aliasmax number of aliases; also if set to 1, PB will warn joining players just like it does for extended ascii characters, etc.

A new facility is being developed for the Enemy Territory edition of PunkBuster called the Alias Tracking Facility. For PB Admins who wish to enable this facility, PunkBuster will track all aliases (different player names) used by each player (GUID) as well as how many times that GUID/alias combination joins the server, when each alias was first used, and last used. Functionality is provided to allow multiple servers on a single box or a LAN to share one PB Alias database file. Experienced ET/PB Admins running popular public servers who are interesting in helping beta test this facility should email us at testing@evenbalance.com and let us know of your interest - please provide at least one server IP:Port where this will be tested. Once out of beta testing, this facility will be expanded to include additional functions and tracking capabilities.

Wednesday 6.4.2003 [1:30PM]

A sample/suggested cvar config for PB Admins has been added to our ET download page.

Saturday 5.31.2003 [7:00PM]

Players who are getting "Empty CDKey" messages trying to connect to PunkBuster ET Servers may attempt a manual CDKey registration. Press the tilde key (the ~ key) to bring down the game console from any game screen and enter the following command (without quotes): "/pb_cdkeyreg". You should see a message stating that a Registration Request was sent to the GuidAuth Master Server. After a few seconds (perhaps up to 30 seconds) you should see a message stating that the CDKey Registration was successful. After that, there should be no more messages about an Empty CDKey when trying to join a PB Server. Players having problems with this procedure (or any PB-related problems in ET) should email support@evenbalance.com and describe in as much detail as possible the problem encountered.

Friday 4.25.2003 [4:30PM]

Version 1.032 of the PB Server for ET has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page.

Release Notes for PB Server v1.032:

  • new pb_sv_guidauth setting defaults to 1 meaning that the PB Server requires connecting players to properly authenticate with the PB Master GuidAuth Server; when set to 0, PB allows all players to connect without the authentication requirement
  • new pb_sv_lanmask setting defaults to ""; this setting tells PB that players who connect with an IP address matching the specified value are connecting from a local LAN (without setting this properly, LAN players may get a "CDKey in use at different IP Address" message upon attempting to connect); For example, if the LAN IP Address of the Server is 192.168.1.1, then issue /pb_sv_lanmask 192.168.1
  • PB Server now checks the type of game server (via the 'dedicated' cvar) and if it is set to 1 for LAN-only play, then PB allows all players to connect without the authentication requirement

Thursday 4.24.2003 [10:00PM]

The initial PB release for ET unintentionally includes invalid violation #60056. We are in the process of auto-updating PB for ET to remove this violation. PB Admins and players should ignore instances of this violation as it may be raised by recently released non-cheat/hack software.

Thursday 4.24.2003 [4:30PM]

Enemy Territory Map Test has been released with integrated PunkBuster support.
